On July 1, 2026, the Office of Informatics and Information Technology will transition into two distinct units operating in parallel and collaboration: IT and Informatics.
This change builds on recent stakeholder input about how we can best support both the IT operations and research-focused needs of our school community, recognizing the unique needs and the interdependencies.
Leadership
- Jomol Mathew will lead the Informatics unit as Associate Dean for Informatics
- Laura Sharp will serve as Chief Administrative Officer for Informatics
- Jeff Korab will lead the IT unit as Chief Information Officer
- A new Chief Administrative Officer for IT position has been created. The search for this role is now underway. Please feel free to share with qualified candidates.
Areas of focus
Informatics will primarily support research-focused services and environments, including:
- Research applications and platforms (such as REDCap, OnCore, Platforms X & R – a full list can be found on the Research Applications KB
- Data engineering
- Clinical Research Data Service
- Clinical trials support
- Health informatics
IT will continue to support operational and administrative technology services, including:
- User support and service management
- Technology infrastructure
- Business analytics
- Instructional technology
- Cybersecurity
While the Office of Informatics & IT will be structured as two parallel units reporting to two different leaders, both units will continue to collaborate extensively. There are many research systems and environments that are not uniquely supported by either unit, support for these tools will continue to be a collaborative effort involving both Informatics and IT.
Importantly, this organizational change is not expected to disrupt services or alter how departments engage with our teams.
The central front door to IT support remains SMPH Navigator
Users should continue to connect with IT in the same way (via help@med.wisc.edu, via SMPH Navigator, or by phone), with support routed to the appropriate unit and team behind the scenes.
This continued evolution will strengthen our work to advance the school’s mission by providing world class IT and informatics expertise and support.
