Educational Technology provides resources, tools, and consulting to support faculty, staff, and students in achieving their teaching and learning objectives through innovative technology. Explore the full suite of services below, each designed to enhance classroom engagement, streamline content creation, and expand learning opportunities.

SMPH users have access to a suite of supported learning technologies offered by UW-Madison IT’s Academic Technology including Atomic Assessments, Kaltura MediaSpace, Turnitin, and many others, which are centrally supported and integrated to enhance teaching and learning.

Commonly requested services from Learn@UW—Madison which are supported by SMPH include Canvas and Top Hat.

Canvas: Learning Management System

Canvas Logo

Canvas is UW-Madison’s primary learning management system, part of the Learn@UW suite, providing a centralized platform for course content and management.

  • Features: Canvas supports grading, quizzing, SpeedGrader, discussions, and multimedia feedback. It integrates with Kaltura, Zoom, Top Hat, Google Apps, and more, offering a seamless experience across devices with iOS and Android apps.

Top Hat | Dynamic Courseware PlatformTop Hat: Audience Response System (ARS)

Top Hat is the supported Audience Response System (ARS) at UW-Madison, fostering active learning through real-time polls, quizzes, and feedback in the classroom.

  • Overview: Top Hat enables instructors to engage students interactively using any web-enabled device, including laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Text messaging support allows participation even with older cell phones.

Media Production and eLearning Modules

Enduring Learning Objects (ELOs)

The Media Production service supports the creation of high-quality educational videos, transforming traditional presentations into Enduring Learning Objects (ELOs) such as narrated lectures and instructional videos.

  • Capabilities: Faculty and staff can create videos for demonstrations, course materials, and research projects. Studio is conveniently located at HSLC, with access to professional recording equipment. Initial consultations are free; further costs are determined during the consultation.
  • Requesting Services: Start by submitting an ELO Request form or contact edtech@med.wisc.edu.

Lecture Capture

Lecture Capture allows faculty to record lectures for later viewing, making them available through the Video Library and accessible via departmental websites or Canvas courses.

  • Availability: Limited to specific lecture halls at HSLC, CSC, and MFCB. Requests should be submitted at least 7 days prior to the event.
  • Packages:
    • Single recording: $300
    • Package options: 10 captures ($2,500), 25 captures ($5,000), 50 captures ($8,000).
  • Schedule: Complete the capture request form or email edtech@med.wisc.edu for assistance.
  • Video Library: Hosted content can be made publicly available or restricted, requiring login credentials. Access the Video Library.

Educational Technology Consulting

Our EdTech consultants assist SMPH faculty and staff in effectively integrating technology into their teaching to enhance student learning outcomes.

  • Consulting Services: Our team brings expertise in educational technology and adult learning, providing tailored guidance on technology implementation.
  • Getting Started: To request a consultation, email edtech@med.wisc.edu. Initial consultations are free; specific costs may apply based on project scope.
