Navigator update: Improved notifications and new secure option for PHI

SMPH Navigator has been updated in order to share more informative customer notifications, improving the experience for all users while also better supporting requests that include protected health information (PHI).

What’s changing

A new, separate secure Navigator option has been introduced for Research Applications request that include PHI (OnCore, eBinder, Participant Payments).
This change allows SMPH (non-secure) Navigator to operate without previous notification restrictions.

What this means for users

Users may notice more detailed information in Navigator ticket notifications, including content that was previously not included.
This is an expected result of removing “safe notification” limitations that were in place when PHI could be submitted through the general Navigator system.

 Submitting requests with PHI

Requests that include PHI must now be submitted through the secure Navigator.

  • The secure site is clearly labeled and designed specifically for PHI submission
  • If PHI is required, request forms will direct users to the appropriate secure location
  • PHI should not be submitted through the standard Navigator
  • PHI should only ever be submitted for the appropriate Research Applications requests (OnCore, eBinder, Participant Payments) that require it on the forms that clearly state that PHI submission is allowed.

Do users need to take action?

No action is needed for most users. Continue using Navigator as usual.
If a request requires PHI, guidance within the form will direct submission to the secure site.
ALL forms that allow PHI are labeled as such.

Why this change was made

This update allows SMPH to:

  • Enable more complete and useful ticket notifications
  • Better protect sensitive information
  • Maintain a clearer separation between standard and PHI-related requests
