The Directors of seven of the Service Lines in the Office of Informatics and Information Technology will be determined using internal SMPH recruitments. This allows the office to draw on the immense talent and experience of its current team. The information below only applies to those who wish to apply to be a Service Line Director.
*Update (9/11/23): These positions are now open. For links to the individual PVLs, please see the post “Service Line Director Positions Open”.
Background and guiding principles
Several guiding principles were established as a framework for the strategy behind the recruitment of the Directors. The goal of these principles is to acknowledge the hard work of the IIT team members and minimize the level of effort and number of steps needed to apply for these positions. For example, rather than a resume and cover letter, only a resume will be required to apply.
- Conduct efficient processes, limiting the number of steps when possible
- Use standard recruitment practices for screening materials
- Utilize clear and consistent criteria across all roles
- Clearly and appropriately communicate timelines and announcements related to search with IIT staff
- Show confidence in current team and leaders by considering internal SMPH applicants first. In case of failure of preliminary internal search, leadership may choose to expand search to applicants outside of SMPH or UW.
- Informed hiring decisions based upon technical knowledge and leadership ability, with feedback considered from internal IIT stakeholders as appropriate
Seven positions efficiently placed across four PVLs
The seven director titles will be grouped across four job postings (PVLs) that will be posted to the internal portal on jobs.wisc. (This must be accessed with a NetID log in.) The PVLs will be grouped as an efficient way for someone to be considered for multiple Director roles that require similar skills and reduce the need to apply numerous times. The ones that were grouped are those most likely to have shared experience, skills, and qualifications and hence be attractive to the same group of applicants. However, this does not mean someone can only apply for one PVL; please “apply liberally” for all PVLs with director role(s) that are of interest. In addition, applying for a PVL with multiple positions on it also does not mean one must put themselves up for all of them, only that it is an option to do so. Applicants to a PVL with multiple director roles included will be able to note exactly which director role(s) they are interested in during the first interview.
The following represent the PVLs and official titles, and the seven director roles of the seven Service Lines being recruited in each. The official titles are the titles that have been selected for these roles from the Title and Standard Job Description Library.
PVL #1: “IT Director I (MSN)”
- User Support Services
- Infrastructure
PVL #2: “IT Director I (MSN)”
- Data Management & Analytics
- Application Development
- Enterprise Application Support
PVL #3: “Teaching, Learning, & Technology Director”
- Education Technology & Training
PVL #4: “IT Director I (MSN)”
- Project Management
The recruitment process
These positions will be posted the second full week of September and then the following process will occur for the recruitment.
- Positions posted internally to jobs.wisc.edu the second full week of September — these are internal postings for which only SMPH employees can be considered
- An announcement to all IIT via email and the website will be sent as quickly as possible to provide more information that helps direct potential applicants to the correct PVL for the director role(s) they may be interested in
- Applications come in from IIT staff who want to be considered for a Service Line Director position — the deadline to apply will be Sept. 24
- Application deadline of Sept. 24 passes
- HR will screen applicant resumes based on required qualifications — it is standard in all recruitments at UW–Madison that only candidates who meet the required qualifications listed in the PVL on jobs.wisc can move forward from this stage
- Qualified candidates proceed to interview with Jeff Korab, Mike Collins, and an impartial panelist from outside IIT — applicants applying to direct multiple Service Lines only have one interview at this stage
- Confirm IIT service line panel interviewers — these will be confirmed after the application deadline to avoid confusion and assumptions about who will apply to be considered for a director position
- Selected candidates proceed to interview with panel of Service Line representatives (panel specific to each director role) — applicants being considered for more than one Service Line will meet with multiple committees
- Final interview with Jeff Korab or Mike Collins and Jomol Mathew
- The standard policies and procedures of hiring are adhered to, such as reference checks, which will be asked for at the end of the process
- Service Line Directors are confirmed and announced
Final information and how to ask questions
Note that a similar process will be used for the internal recruitment of the Business Relationship Manager roles. In addition, please note that no other positions will need to go through a recruitment to keep their current title.
To better assess the skillset and qualifications needed for the Cybersecurity Service Line, that upcoming recruitment will be handled separately and possibly following a different process.
