Q+A with Enterprise Application Support Service Line Justin Knupp

What is your role and initial focus as a new Service Line Director?

My role as the Director of Enterprise Applications will be to oversee the EA service line and to coordinate the acquisition, deployment, and support of centralized applications across SMPH.  From large-scope applications to small, brokered applications, EA will become the centralized hub for applications that are used by multiple groups within SMPH.

My initial focus will be on creating an effective and cohesive team, as well as creating effective outreach channels and communication practices for the team. This coupled with the SMPH Navigator project, as well as projects for the SMPH REDCap infrastructure, will occupy a significant portion of my focus for the next 12 months.

What inspired you to step into this leadership position?

In short, I like building things. This is a tremendous opportunity to spin up a service line that is something SMPH really hasn’t had before in a truly centralized and all-encompassing fashion. The chance to build this service line from the ground up while supporting the goals of SMPH and leveraging my 30+ years of IT experience was extremely appealing to me. This coupled with the raw challenge of the IITC project, and being able to bring my experience and insight into play as a leader, made this a natural fit for me. We have amazing IT professionals within SMPH and I’m truly looking forward to working with a broader and more diverse set of these people than I was able to in my previous role.

How do you envision your service line supporting the goals of the Office of IIT?

Enterprise Applications is a service line that not only supports the faculty, staff, and learners within SMPH, but it also directly supports the other IIT service lines and their needs and operational processes. Our customers are truly everyone within SMPH.   Applications supported by and housed within EA will be used by a truly broad range of customers.

From supporting systems that enable users to get help with their computing devices, to providing support for research projects, to optimizing workflows for onboarding and offboarding, to working with the administrative groups to improve efficiencies, SMPH Enterprise Applications will be touching every mission and goal within SMPH.

What are you most looking forward to in this new role?

I’m looking forward to building a new team and then building a great infrastructure for the group. It’s also going to be a fantastic opportunity to get to know our amazing researchers, staff and learners and learn more about their teams and projects.

What’s one key message you’d like to share with your new team?

I’d like to encourage them to approach this process with what I call patient optimism.  Any project of this nature (the IITC project) is riddled with complexities and challenges. However, meeting those challenges and finding solutions to them is the rewarding part. This takes time and patience. If you can bring a sense of optimism to the work, that makes it all the better.

The IIT leadership has challenged all the Service Line Directors to think outside the box and look at new ways of doing things. This is music to my ears, and I’m going to be constantly encouraging my team to do the same. I’m very much looking forward to working with all of them.
