Pre-Service Line Knowledge Networks

All are invited to join a Knowledge Network as part of the Informatics and Information Technology Collaborative (IITC). The goal of these Knowledge Networks is to begin working as a team before Service Lines are formed and provide a way to explore and inform the work of future Service Lines.

The four pilot Knowledge Networks are:

    • Endpoint support
    • System administration and infrastructure
    • Application support
    • Software development

More information on each network is below.

Each network aims to bring together professionals with specific expertise to facilitate collaboration, knowledge sharing, and improvement in their respective fields. Each Knowledge Network has its unique focus areas, but they all share a common goal of improving efficiency, knowledge sharing, and collaboration within the SMPH informatics and information technology team and our broader community. By leveraging its members’ collective expertise and experiences, SMPH aims to enhance various aspects of IT services and support throughout the school.

Focus areas

Technical Knowledge Exchange: Members of the network will engage in discussions and knowledge sharing related to a wide range of endpoint support topics, including operating systems, hardware, software troubleshooting, security, network connectivity, and emerging technologies. The community will encourage the exchange of practical tips, troubleshooting techniques, and innovative solutions.

Problem-Solving and Collaboration: The network will encourage members to seek assistance, share complex scenarios, and collaborate on resolving challenging endpoint support issues. By fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, the community will enable the exchange of practical experiences, lessons learned, and effective strategies to overcome common and unique obstacles.

Best Practices and Standardization: The network will strive to identify and promote industry best practices in endpoint support. Members will collaborate on putting our SMPH endpoint standard into practice to ensure consistency, quality, and efficiency in service delivery. Additionally, the network will explore the use of automation, scripting, and other tools to streamline support processes.

Software Development

The Software Development Knowledge Network will aim to bring together developers, engineers, designers, testers, and other software professionals who are passionate about creating high-quality software solutions for SMPH. The network will strive to facilitate continuous learning, collaboration, innovation, and excellence in software development practices.

Focus areas

Knowledge Sharing and Learning: A primary objective on this network is to promote a culture of continuous learning and knowledge sharing among community members. The network will encourage open discussions, presentations, and other activities that facilitate the exchange of ideas, best practices, and emerging trends in software development.  This would include both sharing within the SMPH community as well as the larger UW–Madison development communities too.

Collaboration and Networking: The network serves as a platform for fostering collaboration and networking among software development professionals. The network will facilitate connections between individuals from different domains and encourage cross-functional collaboration to leverage diverse perspectives and experiences, leading to enhanced problem-solving and innovative solutions.

Quality Assurance and Best Practices: This network will emphasize the importance of maintaining high standards of quality in software development. By promoting industry best practices, code reviews, and quality assurance processes, this network will strive to improve the reliability, maintainability, and performance of software systems developed within our SMPH community.

System Administration / Infrastructure

The System Administration Knowledge Network will aim to create a platform where system administrators can exchange ideas, best practices, and insights related to their roles. By leveraging the collective expertise and experiences of its participants, the network will strive to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of IT system administrators across SMPH.
