How to Install SMPH VPN

The SMPH Networking and Security group have set up GlobalProtect VPN portal for SMPH Employees.  SMPH VPN portal has greater security controls which enhances the protections for securing SMPH data.  This includes Multifactor Authentication via DUO as well as additional host checking that include verifying the device connecting to the portal is patched, running anti-virus and complies to minimum security standards. SMPH resources are only accessible via this portal, resulting in increased security for SMPH data and resources.

Instructions for Installing the Palo Alto GlobalProtect VPN Client

  1. After downloading the file, navigate to your Downloads folder and locate the .msi file. Double-click it to begin the installation.Locate the downloaded file in the downloads folder.
  2. Follow the prompts given to you by the setup wizard.Click Next.
    Click Next.
    Click Next.
    If a Windows Security prompt pops up, please click “Allow“.
    Click Close.

Step-by-step guide to setting up SMPH VPN Gateway to GlobalProtect on a PC

  1. Open Global Protect settings by clicking the Global Protect icon in the start menu
  2. Go to the three bars at the top and go to settings
  3. On the General tab under the portals at the button click “Add”
  4. When asked for a portal address, enter: smph.vpn.wisc.edu and click “Save”
  5. Now when you connect you should see the Portal option at the bottom.
  6. *If you have multiple VPN portals set up, make sure smph.vpn.wisc.edu portal is highlighted & click “Connect”
  7. You will need to sign in with your UW Net ID, and will then need to type authenticate with MFA-Duo.
    You can enter a passcode or enter a ‘1’  and push “Sign In” to receive a Duo Push notification on your device.

  8. After a few moments, you should then be connected to the SMPH-Main SMPH VPN Portal
